The Difference Between Honed Stone and Polished Stone

The Difference Between Honed Stone and Polished Stone

Both honed and polished stone convey luxury, class, and timeless beauty. However, honing and polishing are completely different in appearance. Learn more about each type of finish. The correct choice is the one that complements your personality and tastes.

Honed Stone

Honed stone is one in which its once shiny surface has been ground away. What remains is a flat, matte surface. Honed stone absorbs liquid, so it is porous.

It looks natural and light compared to a polished surface. If you look directly at the stone while standing, you may see a softer luminescence reflected. So, the act of honing is to grind the stone down and remove the shine and reflective qualities.

Levels of Honing: Matte and Satin

Matte honed stone has the least amount of reflective qualities. You will likely see a slight glow of a light source if it is directly overhead when you look straight down directly at it. By contrast, a satin-honed stone shows more reflection. You might be able to discern the outline of a light source when looking at the satin stone surface.

Common Applications for Honed Stone

Heavy traffic areas are excellent places to apply honed stone.

  • Top uses include:
  • Floors
  • Foyer
  • Hallways
  • Stairs

Polished Stone

Polished stones give off a natural shine. One good example is polished marble. When you look at it, you can see your reflection and you will be able to discern the identity of light sources.

What is also visible is the depth of colors and veins throughout the design. Polished stone repels water; therefore, it is not as porous as honed stone. The act of polishing stone is to give it a glossy appearance.

Common Applications for Polished Stone

Surfaces that you want to highlight are perfect for polished stone finishes.

  • Top uses include:
  • Countertops
  • Fireplaces
  • Sink tops
  • Tables

Stone Durability

Both honed and polished stone surfaces are durable; however, the type of stone determines its toughness. Take, for example, granite. It is naturally a strong stone. Even so, polishing or honing it can add an extra buffer against stains, moisture, and scratches.
