Make Your Grout Last Longer with These Tips

Make Your Grout Last Longer with These Tips

We here at Stone Restoration Works love helping our neighbors professionally clean and restore even the dingiest of grout. That said, you may not be able to give your flooring a professional cleaning as often as you’d like to. Fortunately, there are some things that you can do in order to make the cleanliness of your grout last as long as possible in between those professional cleanings.

The first tip that can help you keep your grout clean is to clean up spills as soon as possible. If you let a spill sit on your grout for a bit before cleaning it up, there’s a good chance that it will stain it. This happens often if the liquid is a dark color. The grout will end up soaking a lot of it in, and it may be difficult for you to get your grout back to its original color even after you’ve cleaned up the spill.

Even with frequent cleanings, there's a good chance that your grout still gets dirty on occasion. If you notice that there’s some discoloration or dirt on your grout, you may be tempted to use some type of harsh chemical to clean it. Unfortunately, this can damage your grout, and you will wind up having a bigger problem on your hands. The same can be said for wool brush. They may scratch your grout and cause it to break apart. Your best bet is to use mild cleaners with a mop or a cloth to clean your grout. Warm water and soap may be all that you need in order to get your grout clean.

Many individuals find it impossible to keep mold and mildew from accumulating on their grout. This tends to be a big problem around tiles on shower walls. Moisture can loosen your grout and discolor it. While it’s perfectly fine for your grout to get wet when you are taking a shower or wiping down the walls, you do need to wipe them completely dry when you are finished. It will probably only take you a minute or two to wipe down the entire surface, but it can have a huge impact on how long your grout lasts. For those that are diligent at wiping down their tiles and cleaning up spills as soon as they happen, their grout can last for years to come.
